An Opinion On “An Interracial Fix for Black Marriage”
I manage apartments. One property is primarily african american. Primarily young (20′s). Primarily poor. The current employment options create a great deal of stress. As far as marriage, most of my tenants make poor decisions. The young men have little concept of the neccessary decsions required to enter a mature, monogomous relationship. they want a job. They want children. They want a chris brown new girlfriend. But a wife? They are not aware of the requirements to get and keep a wife. Will they work hard? Do they have values? Yes. But marraige requires them to change their perspective on life.
I think the author my also want to talk to men as well to see if the same level of commitment to marraige is presant amoung men. I think he is saying they are not.
I do believe the role of the income tax which began before a majority of black families could establish sufficient wealth to ride out the impact of economic dislocations reduced the likelihood of affluence in black families. It is hard to build a successful small business when one has to deal with the burden of a income tax. I also think the rise of public education did not provide poor blacks with sufficient skills to successfully adapt to the information age. So the fair tax and school vouchers would provide the poor with a greater ability to obtain financial independance and hopefully a better success in marraige. A strong marriage helps a man and woman through the tough times in life. If their is no money in the bank, then the tough times are almost impossible to survive.
